Science day!

Today we had a science day learning all about animals, including humans. 

We began by looking at the average life span on animals and how usually larger animals live longer, but not in all cases.

Some people used publish mash to create theirs.

We then went on to look at how we change as we grow and the different stages in a human life cycle. We had great fun creating timelines of our lives. 

For homework we had been set the challenge to bring baby pictures. At the end of the lesson we went round and tried to guess who was who from the photos. 

After lunch we then began our own investigation. We thought of our own questions to investigate using our measurements skills.

After looking at all the physical changes we then looked at emotional changes. In groups we acted our scenarios and discussed why we think the people had reacted the way they had.

 We discussed how when we are all going through these changes being a good friend is really important. We began designing our own posters using the computers. Look back next week when we have completed them!

Today we used atlases to find Viking settlements for our topic the Vikings

Living things and their habitats

In Year 5 we are looking at the life cycles of different living things. We have so far researched and found out lots about the life cycles of amphibians, mammals and birds. 

Next week we are looking at the life cycles of insects. We would like to welcome our newest members of the high fives... Our four caterpillars! We will be looking at the changes they make. 

Selby High School

On Wednesday last week all of year 5 went to Selby high school for a special day. First we were introduced to our teacher then we went to make bath bombs and orange zested and lemon zested smelling candles. They smelt delicious! In the afternoon we did a bit of drama and created raps in music.

Bright colours for a bright future

At Selby Abbey Primary School Year 5 are currently working towards their Archbishop of York Young Leaders award. As part of this, Year 5 have undertaken a project in which they have researched a charity each. These have included: Oxfam, Barnados, Cancer Research UK, Archbishop of York Youth Trust and Trussell Trust.

In Year 5 we also looked at how we can all help to support these different charities. As part of this the whole school wore bright colours donating £1 each, supporting the motto “Bright colours for a bright future”. Children also baked rainbow buns and sold this at playtime to their peers.

In total we were able to raise a huge £61.24 for each charity! 

Life as a Viking child

We have completed some amazing work in class and some outstanding homework all about what life was like for Viking children. We also wrote an informal letter as a Viking child. Take a look below to find out more. 

The Witches' Spell

Today we began learning The Witches' spell by Macbeth. We are aiming to know it all by heart! It was hard for year 5 to learn it off by heart but we learned it. Then we did story maps in groups and performed it to the rest of the class.
